City Centre, Siliguri

The City Centre is one of the largest commercial developments in eastern India, positioned at the interface between the city and the township. The large retail complex has been designed to keep common corridors and atria naturally ventilated along the line of the prevailing wind direction. Perforated rain screens are used for large parts of the facade to keep out the rain while allowing natural ventilation for a pleasant microclimate inside, despite the high humidity levels. In keeping with the traditional Indian schema of high streets and porous spaces, the City Centre breaks down into a complex of well-scaled structures offering maximum interface to the users. The finishes of the building are simple, to create a backdrop for students of local art schools to exhibit their work, thereby enriching the space with urban art and culturally rooting this development in the artistically rich heritage of this region. The project is CRISIL Real Estate 7 Star Rated and has won the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) 2012, under the Commercial Projects Category.
